LO1 Wikipedia

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

a) Wikipedia's purpose is to inform its audience. This means they distribute information to the public. The information that Wikipedia distributes is often if not always written and edited by the general public. Wikipedia is a very different kind of company than the BBC for example as the BBC is controlled as a business and it makes money out of distributing information to people. A similarity between the BBC and Wikipedia is that they both allow some level of civilian journalism.

b). A visitor would most likely go to this site to find information on a subject. The visitor would then navigate the site using the navigation bar and then click on the subject in which they were searching for, they could then edit or view content that other users have posted. If the user is unsatisfied with this information they could then find information somewhere else and edit the wikipedia page to make it more satisfying for other users.

c).  The information is easy to find with Wikipedia as there are a number of ways to navigate the site. The main way to navigate the site is to use the search bar, however there are sections on the homepage such as the featured article section that provides you with a specific article that the people who run Wikipedia have chosen. The user could also used the news section on the homepage.

d). There are lots of features on the wikipedia page. One feature is the search bar that is used to enter a specific search for specific information, this is often denoted by the symbol of the magnifying glass. Another feature is the header which contains a welcome to wikipedia section that lists nine often searched categories denoting that a lot of the target audience search for these catorgories. Similar to this there is the footer which contains information such as terms of use and privacy policy, this denotes the legal aspect of the site so that there are no legal issues. A feature often overlooked is the scroll bar at the right hand side of the web page, this bar is used to scroll down the page this denotes that it makes it easier for the user to navigate.  The wikipedia homepage has a very minimalistic design so that it connotes organisation and cleanliness, however to do this lots of boxes where used to keep that look. The logo of the wikipedia website has been placed in the top left of the webpage, this again is to connote and air of organisation and knowledge, just in the same way a library would organise their shelves.

e). The website is beneficial to the audience as it allows the visitor access to information easily. The befits of the website to the producer is that it is altruistic as the website operates to help people rather that make a profit, this idea of helping the community ties into the purpose of Web 2.0 as this was created to help to progression in building virtual communites and user generated content.
